Volunteer

Except for a part-time administrator, the South Carolina Railroad Museum is an all-volunteer organization. Regardless of your interests and skills, we have a place where you can help. We welcome museum members, the general public, and school or work groups with open arms.

All of our operating train crew members are volunteers who undergo extensive training and testing to ensure they operate in a safe manner. We are required to follow the same procedures as the mainline operating railroads and are periodically visited by inspectors from the Federal Railroad Administration.

Our tourist trains also utilize volunteers as car hosts. Their main job is to ride in the passenger cars with our visitors and point out places of interest and interesting information about our railroad and museum.

Maintaining our track and rolling stock requires volunteers who are willing to get down and dirty. Our maintenance crews usually work on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Very few are able to help every workday but pitch in when they can. On operating days we also need volunteers to help in the ticket office and gift shop. We also need volunteers who can work from home on our newsletter, website, marketing, and with our growing collection of artifacts.
